Food and Wine: The Depot
by Wendy Harmon on March 6th 2012 (3:10PM EST)

The high country of North Carolina is home to some delicious restaurants, diners and dives! Some of these have been around for many years while others have just started, even during this though economic down turn. These people have a passion for food (or wine . . . or both!) and they're going to show it off!

One place that has been around for a while is The Depot at Cody Creek in Dobson (Surry county). This place is not only about the food but about the experience! Styled after an old railroad depot The Depot Restaurant on NC HWY 601 just outside of Dobson offers a great combination of early American charm, great food, and relaxing surroundings. A little bit of a drive for most of its patrons The Depot is worth the travel time through the rolling farmland of rural North Carolina. The rustic charm is great, but the food is even better! This is my favorite place to get Hickory smoked Prime Rib (my mouth is starting to water already!) at a VERY affordable price (12oz prime rib for under 15$). The Depot is closed on Mondays, but the rest of the week they offer various deals each night. It might be all you can eat peel-n-shrimp, dinner for two, or other various specials.

Not only is The Depot famous for it's food it's also known for it's well stocked bar! They have 20 varieties of domestic and imported beer as well as several national, international, and regional wines. Also, The Depot is part of Cody Creek, a well known scenic destination known for its wedding chapel, gazebo, covered bridge, general store, and cabins (which can be rented!).

If this sounds like a trip you want to take then be ready to prepare your senses! It's off the beaten path a little bit (not off a major road) but I'm sure once you're there you'll fall in love.
